ABSTRACT:
The aim of the study was to evaluate the antiulcer activity of aqueous extract of Passiflora foetida (AQPF) and ethanolic extracts of Passiflora foetida (ELPF) leaves in gastric ulcer of albino Wister rats in Stress induced ulcers, Alcohol induced ulcers, and Paracetamol induced ulcers models at single dosing (250mg/kg) and repeated dosing (250mg/kg for 7 days) approaches. Ranitidine (50mg/kg) and Omeprazole (10mg/kg) were used as the standard drugs. Gastric ulcers were induced in rats by 80% alcohol, paracetamol and forced immersion stress induced methods. Paracetamol induced ulcer model and stress induced model the ulcer index was determined. Depending on the model, outcome measured were percentage inhibition of Lesion index, ulcer index. The findings of this study confirmed that Passiflora foetida leaves have anti-ulcer pharmacologic activity due to the presence of secondary metabolites in it. Therefore, this study validates its anti-ulcer use in Ethiopian folk medicine and Passiflora foetida leaves have been used to treat peptic ulcer disease (PUD).
